What to Wear to Your 3D Ultrasound Appointment
Not sure what to wear ultrasound appointment? Discover the best, most comfortable clothing choices for a seamless 3D/4D ultrasound experience.

You’ve marked the calendar, drank your gallons of water, and are finally ready to meet your baby. But as you stand in front of your closet on the morning of your session, a very practical question arises: what to wear ultrasound appointment?
At Baby Studio 4D, we want you to feel incredibly comfortable, relaxed, and ready for photos! Unlike a sterile medical clinic where you might have to put on a paper gown, our elective studio is all about your comfort. Let’s break down exactly what you should (and shouldn’t) wear to ensure a seamless, wonderful experience.
(Note: Elective ultrasounds are for keepsake purposes and do not replace the medical care provided by your OB-GYN.)
The Golden Rule: Two-Piece Outfits
The most important thing to remember is that our sonographers need complete, unobstructed access to your entire belly—from just beneath your ribs all the way down to your hip bones.
Because of this, the absolute best outfit choice is two pieces: a loose top and comfortable bottoms.
If you follow our ultimate preparation guide, you know that relaxation is key to getting the baby in a good position. When you wear a t-shirt or a flowy blouse, we can simply lift the shirt up and tuck a small paper towel into the waistband of your pants to protect your clothes from the gel.
Comfort is Key: Leggings Over Jeans
When choosing your bottoms, reach for your favorite pair of maternity leggings or soft sweatpants.
Sometimes, to get the perfect angle of the baby’s face, the sonographer has to rest the wand quite low on your pelvis. Stiff maternity jeans with thick waistbands can get in the way or feel uncomfortable when rolled down. Leggings are soft, flexible, and easily adjusted. Ensuring you are physically comfortable is a major part of our pre-appointment checklist.
Preparing for the Photos
While the focus is on the baby, don’t forget that you might end up in a few photos too! Many families take pictures in our beautiful viewing room while the ultrasound is happening on the big screen.
If you want to look put-together for these candid family photos, wear a top in a solid color or a gentle floral pattern. Avoid wearing neon colors or extremely busy patterns that might reflect poorly in the dimmed lighting of the ultrasound room. If you are already thinking about how to frame these photos, check out our guide on ultrasound keepsakes and preservation.
What NOT to Wear
There are a few wardrobe choices that can make an ultrasound session slightly awkward:
- The Maxi Dress: We love a beautiful maternity dress, but for an ultrasound, it means pulling the dress all the way up to your chest. While we are completely professional and will drape you with towels, most moms find this makes them feel a bit exposed.
- Rompers and Jumpsuits: Similar to dresses, one-piece outfits are a logistical nightmare when you need to expose just your belly!
- Dry-Clean Only Tops: The ultrasound gel is water-based and wipes off easily, but it is still wet. Don’t wear a silk blouse or a top that will stain easily if a drop of water hits it. If you want to know how to care for your actual ultrasound prints once you get home, read our post-appointment memory care guide.
Conclusion
Getting ready for your session should be fun, not stressful. A cute, loose t-shirt, your favorite stretchy leggings, and a smile are all you really need. We want you to focus entirely on the miracle happening on the screen, not on adjusting a tight waistband. For more tips on getting ready, head back to our main 3D/4D preparation guide.
