Gender Blood Test vs Ultrasound: Which Is More Accurate Early On?
Comparing a gender blood test vs ultrasound? Learn the pros, cons, and timeline of each method to find out your baby’s gender accurately.

The moment you discover you’re pregnant, the countdown begins. Not just to the due date, but to the day you can finally stop saying “it” and start using a name! As the founder of Baby Studio 4D, the question I am asked more than any other is: “Should I get the gender blood test vs ultrasound?”
It is a great question. Ten years ago, ultrasound was the only real elective option. Today, clinical DNA blood testing has revolutionized early pregnancy. Both methods are incredible, but they serve different purposes and operate on very different timelines. Let’s compare them head-to-head so you can decide which route is perfect for your gender reveal journey.
(Disclaimer: Elective ultrasounds and early gender DNA tests are for keepsake purposes and do not replace diagnostic medical screening from your OB-GYN.)
The Timeline: When Can You Know?
The biggest difference between the two methods is the timeline. If patience isn’t your virtue, the blood test is the undisputed winner.
As outlined in our ultimate guide to finding out baby’s gender, fetal DNA begins circulating in the mother’s blood very early. With a clinical DNA test like Peekaboo, you can find out the gender as early as 6 weeks into the pregnancy. To understand the exact science, you can read our deep dive into the Peekaboo early gender blood test.
Ultrasound, on the other hand, relies on visual physical development. Baby boys and girls look nearly identical on a scan until about the 13th or 14th week. Therefore, we do not recommend relying on an ultrasound for a definitive gender determination until 15 weeks. If you try earlier, the margin of error increases significantly. You can see a full timeline in our article when to find out baby’s gender.
DNA Blood Test: Accurate as early as 6 weeks.
Ultrasound: Accurate starting at 15 weeks.
The Accuracy Factor
Both methods are highly accurate when performed at the correct time by professionals, but the numbers slightly favor science over sight.
DNA Blood Test Accuracy
A clinical venous blood draw (done in a sterile studio, not an at-home finger prick) boasts a 99.9% accuracy rate. It looks directly at the chromosomes for the presence of the male ‘Y’ marker. It doesn’t rely on the baby cooperating or positioning themselves perfectly. For a complete understanding of why it’s so precise, review our post on early gender DNA test accuracy.
Ultrasound Accuracy
At 15 weeks and beyond, an experienced ultrasound technician using high-quality equipment can determine gender with 98-99% accuracy. However, the ultrasound has one major variable: your baby! If the baby is crossing their legs tightly or sitting on the umbilical cord, the technician simply cannot see the anatomy. In these rare cases, we happily bring moms back a few days later when the baby is feeling more photogenic.
The Experience: Science vs. Emotion
Accuracy and timing are important, but so is the emotional experience. This is where the two methods diverge drastically.
The blood test is clinical. It takes five minutes, and you receive an email a few days later. It is highly efficient and offers incredible peace of mind.
The ultrasound is an event. You are in a cozy, darkened room. You hear the rhythmic whoosh-whoosh of the heartbeat. You watch your baby kick, stretch, and suck their thumb on a massive screen. When the sonographer finally points out “it’s a boy!” or “it’s a girl!”, you are visually connecting the gender to the moving little life in front of you.
The Verdict: Why Not Both?
At Baby Studio 4D, we see a massive trend of families choosing both. They book the Peekaboo blood test at 7 weeks so they can start shopping and planning the nursery. Then, they book a 15-week gender ultrasound as a celebration to visually confirm the news and show the baby off to the grandparents!
Ultimately, the choice between a gender blood test vs ultrasound comes down to how early you want to know and whether you prefer scientific data or a visual, emotional experience.
